Four Categories of Social Security Cases:

1) Retirement
• You may begin receiving benefits at age 62. The amount of benefits increase for each year you wait to retire, until 70 years.
2) Disability
• You may be younger than 65
• You meet work requirements
• Are considered disabled under the Social Security Program’s medical guidelines: Check at www.socialsecurity.gov
Social Security uses the following definition of disability in determining whether your are entitled to benefits: the inability to do any substantial gainful activity by reason of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which has lasted or can be expected to last for a period of not less than twelve months, or which can be expected to result in death.
3) Dependent
• You are a spouse of a retired or disabled worker
• You are a minor or disabled child of a retired or disabled worker
4) Survivor
• You are a surviving spouse, or a minor child of a worker who qualified for Social Security retirement or disability benefits
OR
• You are a disabled child of a worker who qualified for Social Security retirement or disability benefits
